Chelsea will play second fiddle to David Beckham
Chelsea, one of the most popular teams in all of soccer, agrees to play second fiddle to David Beckham.
Chelsea FC, the same team that became the 2007 FA Cup champions, and the same team that ruled the English Premiership for two years before Manchester United won this year's Premiership title, agreed to let David Beckham shine when they face Beckham and his boys in Los Angeles.
Chelsea is one of the most glamorous teams in all of international football. This team is synonymous to Tiger Woods in golf and the Wimbledon championships in tennis.
Despite that, Chelsea agreed to play second fiddle to David Beckham on July 21. They are set to face the Los Angeles Galaxy in the United States on the 21st, when Beckham finally makes his highly-anticipated debut, and with Chelsea agreeing to let David Beckham have his way with them, this just shows how influential Beckham has become in the sport of soccer.
''It's a big moment for L.A. and also U.S. soccer,'' Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho said after Chelsea practiced for the first time this week.
''They couldn't choose a better player to achieve what they want to achieve. In Europe, we want U.S. soccer to go up (in popularity). We are Chelsea and we have a responsibility. We want to give the Los Angeles Galaxy a big game to promote their new team.''
Other Chelsea players on the other hand, do not share the same enthusiasm as their manager.
''Is it MLS?'' Chelsea left-back Ashley Cole asked hesitantly. ''I didn't know too much about that league until, of course, Beckham's gone there. This is one person who's changed and I will start watching it now. Hopefully him going there will change people's minds to start watching it and enjoy American football.''
