Horse Racing Saturday Winners
Lawyer Ron won his fifth straight victory when he captured the Rebel Stakes at Oaklawn Park last Saturday.
While the rest of the sporting world are going crazy over this year's NCAA March Madness, Lawyer Ron just kept on racking up wins.
The Kentucky-bred stallion was a late favorite among the crowd of 32,983 and paid $5.60, $3.80, $2.80 for his three-length victory in the 1 1/16th mile race.
''He settled in real nice down the back side,'' jockey John McKee said.
McKee adds, ''I had three horses up ahead and while it looked liked like we were losing some ground around the turn I think the best part of the track was three or four lanes off the rail, which was exactly where Bob (referring to trainer Bob Holthus) told me he wanted to see the horse."
John McKee said the race went according to plan.
''I just followed instructions, he did the rest,'' McKee said. Bob Holthus told McKee to get off the rail out of the first turn and McKee.
''In the stretch he really kicked it in and gave me a big move,'' McKee said. Lawyer Ron was running fourth at the three-quarter mile mark by 1 1/2 lengths. Entering the stretch he was 2 1/2 lengths ahead.
Lawyer Ron took the lead at the top of the stretch and went on to a three-length victory over Red Raymond. Both colts are trained by Bob Holthus. Finishing third was Steppenwolfer, who was second to Lawyer Ron in the Southwest Stakes.
More horse racing winners last Saturday include Deputy Glitters winning the Tampa Bay Derby, Like Now becoming the most liked stallion after winning the Gotham Stakes and A.P. Warrior taking San Felipe.
